When and where?

Map: http://www.christieestates.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/BrauntonBurrowsguide-FINAL.pdf
A detailed map is available from Sandy Lane car park for £3. Meet each day at 09:30 for registration. Finish at 15:00.

Directions: From Barnstaple take A361 towards Braunton. Just before you reach the village you will see a left hand turning to Crow Point sign posted. Take this lane and you can then go straight to Sandy Lane Car park in the centre of the dunes or turn left down the toll road to Broadsands Car Park which is near Crow point. Parking charges apply.
We will spread out within each zone (see map) to survey. Please let us know of all bumblebee sightings. If you find a Brown-banded or Moss carder bee, please record the location as a six figure grid reference if possible, and their forage plant.

What should I bring?
Suitable outdoor clothing, including sturdy footwear. Packed lunch. Come prepared for rain (waterproofs) or sun (sun screen, hat, and plenty of water). Ticks may be present, and you are advised to wear long sleeves and trousers. You may wish to bring insect repellent. A limited number of nets and pots will be available to borrow. If you have your own please bring them. You may wish to bring a notebook and pen, and if you have them a hand lens and field guide. Free identification guides are available for all. Please bring a map if you are unfamiliar with the Burrows.

Health and safety
We ask that you familiarise yourself with the Risk Assessment and other details in the accompanying email prior to the event. Trained first aiders will be present at the event. If you wish to bring a first aid kit please do so, and if you are a trained first aider please notify the event organisers.

What’s the aim?
To survey for all bumblebees, with a focus on the rare Brown-banded and Moss carder bees. Braunton Burrows is one of the last remaining places in Devon for these species. The event is a chance to collect important data on threatened species to help with our conservation work, and to practice your identification skills.
